What "Goods at Owner's Risk" Actually Means, and Why to Ask Before You Book
If you've ever gotten a moving quote in India, there's a good chance the words "goods carried at owner's risk" appeared somewhere in the fine print, usually near the bottom, usually in smaller type than everything else. It sounds like a formality. It isn't.
What the phrase is doing
In plain terms, it means the mover is not accepting responsibility if your things are damaged, lost, or broken in transit, unless you've separately purchased insurance and even then, the exclusions can be broad. It shifts the entire risk of the move onto you, the customer, while you're paying someone else to do the moving.
Why it's so common
Declared-value insurance costs the mover money to underwrite and administer, so leaving it out, or making it an easy-to-miss add-on, keeps quotes looking cheaper than a fully insured move actually costs. It's a completely legal practice. It's just one that most customers don't notice until something is already broken.
The questions that cut through it
Before you book anyone, ask directly: is this move insured by default, or is insurance an add-on I need to request? What exactly is excluded, in writing, not verbally? If something breaks, what's the process, and how long does a claim actually take to get paid? A mover who answers these clearly and immediately is telling you something. One who gets vague or changes the subject is telling you something too.
What "insured by default" should look like
Declared-value cover through a licensed insurance partner, not a verbal promise. Exclusions printed in plain language before you book, not buried in a contract you sign on moving day. A damage window you can actually meet, generally 48 hours to report, and a claims timeline that's stated upfront rather than discovered after the fact.
Our own answer to this
Every Haath move is insured by default, through a licensed partner, with the exclusions printed in plain words before you book, not after. Damage reported within 48 hours moves into our claims fast lane, with approved claims paid within 7 days. We'd rather you asked us this question directly than found the answer the hard way.
