Seven Questions to Ask Any Packers and Movers Before You Book
The packers and movers industry in India runs largely on trust you can't verify until moving day, by which point it's too late to change your mind. These are the questions worth asking any mover, including us, before you book.
1. Are the crew your own employees, or day labour?
Many operators, especially aggregators, dispatch whichever daily-wage labour is available that day, not a trained, accountable team. Ask directly who the crew answers to, and what happens if something goes wrong on the day.
2. Is the quote fixed, or does it change after the survey?
A quote given over the phone without seeing your home is a guess, and guesses tend to grow on moving day once the truck is half-loaded. A proper quote follows a video or in-person survey and is itemised, not a single round number.
3. What happens if something breaks?
Ask for the claims process in plain words: how damage is reported, what the timeline for payment looks like, and what's excluded. If the answer is vague or defensive, that's information too.
4. Is my move insured by default, or is it an add-on?
"Goods at owner's risk" is common enough in the fine print that it's worth asking outright, before you book, not after something breaks.
5. Can I see my things being packed, or do they disappear into a truck?
A mover who's comfortable with you watching the packing process, photographing items, and tracking the move is usually a mover confident in how they operate. One who discourages this is worth a second thought.
6. What happens to "extra labour" or "extra distance" charges?
These are the most common source of moving-day surprises: a narrow staircase, a longer carry than expected, suddenly becomes a new line item. Ask upfront whether the crew and hours quoted are the crew and hours that show up, no additions after booking.
7. Do they serve your area specifically, or are they spreading thin?
A mover with deep, local knowledge of your specific city, its buildings, its traffic patterns, its monsoon timing, tends to handle a move more smoothly than one operating everywhere and nowhere in particular.
